Historic rise in the number of summer workers in Borås
The municipal housing company Bostäder i Borås, together with Borås Stad, has taken on a record number of young people for the summer of 2023. With help from Arbetslivsförvaltningen, recruitment has been multiplied several times over, rising from the usual 20 summer workers to 150. At the same time, Bostäder i Borås plans to develop the summer jobs into wider holiday jobs that run across all the school holidays.

At the same time, Bostäder i Borås plans to develop the summer jobs into wider holiday jobs that run across all the school holidays.
- We turn 100 this year, and our tenants have asked for nicer courtyards and outdoor spaces to mark the anniversary, says Shad Hussein, newly appointed project manager at Bostäder i Borås. From that we drew up a proposal to take on more holiday workers, and how it could be done in practice. Borås Stad took to the proposal, and together we managed to bring this huge project home.
The young people are employed by the municipality, and Bostäder i Borås is responsible for giving them work. To handle the large increase in hires, the housing company and the city have also recruited six young supervisors through the sports organisation RF-SISU. They are currently being trained in leadership and in understanding how Bostäder i Borås works.
The plan is to develop the summer jobs into holiday jobs that also run across the autumn, Christmas, winter and Easter breaks. The work will include gardening, cleaning and painting. One group of the young people will also be responsible for holiday activities for children who are off school.
- It feels really good to be able to offer so many young people meaningful work and at the same time invest in our areas, says Shad Hussain. The holiday jobs help the young people develop themselves and take care of their local surroundings, while we create a more attractive place to live for our tenants and, in the long run, for the whole of Borås. It is a win-win for everyone involved.
