Bostäder i Borås is carrying out its biggest summer initiative so far. For the third year running, the housing company is increasing the number of holiday jobs, and this year 260 young people aged 15 to 18 will be employed. Fourteen supervisors have also been taken on to guide them and provide a sense of security throughout the summer.
- When 260 young people put on their work clothes on Monday, more than a job awaits them, says Talar Kirkor, head of area development at Bostäder i Borås. For many it is the first time they feel responsibility, earn their own money and see how their work contributes to something positive. It is a great feeling to be part of, and something Bostäder i Borås is very proud of.
The young people's work is divided into two periods so that as many as possible get the chance of a first job. The first group starts on Monday, straight after the end of the school year. The tasks range from weeding flower beds and planting flowers to freshening up playgrounds and arranging activities for children. Each work team has a supervisor who answers questions, shows how the tools are used and makes sure everyone feels secure in their task. Besides the practical work, the young people also get a course in life skills with concrete advice on saving, personal finances and how to make your dreams happen.
- After just a week or so we see routines, responsibility and teamwork settle in, says Talar Kirkor. The young people leave with references, new contacts and above all the courage to apply for their next job. Experience shows that many quickly find part-time work or new holiday jobs after their time with us.
