Why the radiators feel cold - even though the heating is working

2 min read

When autumn arrives it often feels chillier at home, and many people find the radiators cool. That does not mean anything is wrong. Here is why.

This time of year can feel a little deceptive. After a warm summer the autumn air feels cold, and many people wonder why the radiators do not feel warm. In fact the heating is usually working exactly as it should.

The walls of the building still hold heat from the summer, and not much extra heat is needed to keep a comfortable indoor temperature of 20-21 degrees. Right now water of about 30-35 degrees is sent out into the heating system during the day. Since that is lower than body temperature, the radiators can feel cool even though they are giving off exactly the heat that is needed.

How to check the temperature yourself

Would you like to make sure you have the right temperature at home? You are welcome to collect a thermometer from our reception.

Keep this in mind when you put up your thermometer:

  • Do not place it in a window or above a radiator
  • Keep it at least one metre from an outside wall
  • Preferably at head height

Feel the radiator

  • Place the back of your hand at the top of the side of the radiator and move it slowly downwards. Take care if your radiator is hot.
  • You should feel a difference in temperature between the top and the bottom - then it is working as it should.
  • Also check that the thermostat is set to maximum.

Do not forget the vents

For the heat to spread as it should, the air needs to circulate. Fresh air comes in through vents above or below the windows, where the radiators warm it up. If the vents are closed or blocked, by curtains or furniture for example, cold air still gets in, but then we cannot warm it. The result is that it feels colder indoors.
