Simple tips for saving electricity at home
23 January is Electricity Day, and to mark it here are a few simple but effective tips for saving electricity in the kitchen and around the home.
The dishwasher
Fill the dishwasher completely before you run it. A full machine uses less energy than several half-full loads.
Lid on
Use a lid when you boil something - it saves time and energy. And do not forget to use the residual heat on the hob.
Use the fridge wisely
Defrost frozen food in the fridge. The cold from the frozen food helps lower the temperature in the fridge, so it uses less electricity. And let hot food cool down before you put it in the fridge, otherwise energy is wasted cooling it.
The right temperature
Keep the fridge and freezer at the recommended temperatures (+4-5 degrees in the fridge, -18 degrees in the freezer) for the best energy efficiency.
Defrost the freezer
Defrosting regularly keeps the freezer efficient and economical.
Clean behind the fridge and freezer
Keep the area free of dust to avoid using extra energy.
Hidden power drains
Switch off and unplug chargers and appliances when they are not in use.
Swap your bulbs for LED bulbs
They last longer and are far more energy efficient than traditional bulbs.
Avoid standby mode
Switch electronics off completely instead of leaving them on standby
Together we make smart energy choices for a sustainable future.
