More young people than ever get a summer job with us

2 min read

We are running our biggest summer scheme so far. This year 287 young people aged between 15 and 18 get holiday work in the company. To give them a safe and rewarding start to working life, 17 supervisors have also been taken on.

- For many of the young people this is their very first job, says Talar Kirkor, head of area development at Bostäder i Borås. So it is about much more than the tasks themselves. It is about being given responsibility, being part of a team and discovering what you can actually do. Being part of that journey is something we are very proud of.

The summer jobs are split into two three-week periods so that as many young people as possible get the chance to work over the summer. They will work on upkeep and improvements in the areas, including operations and maintenance as well as activities for children and young people.

This year the young people also have an important role in the work on kerbside collection (FNI), which makes it easier for tenants to sort their waste at home. One of the supervisors will work specifically on kerbside collection, and all the supervisors have been trained in the subject.

- We want to give the young people tasks that are both useful and something to be proud of. When they help explain kerbside collection, they get to contribute to a more sustainable Borås while developing their own ability to meet people and communicate, says Talar Kirkor.

As part of the job, the young people will knock on doors and tell tenants about the new collection scheme. The work starts in Hulta, where Bostäder i Borås has worked intensively on various development efforts in the area for several years.

As well as work experience, the young people get the chance to develop important skills such as teamwork, taking responsibility and dealing with people. The aim is to give them valuable experience to take with them into future jobs and studies.

- A summer job can be the start of something much bigger. Every year we see young people grow with the task, gain confidence and take the experience with them. It is an investment both in the young people and in the future, says Talar Kirkor.
