Floors

  • Never use strong, corrosive products (such as bleach) when you clean the floor.
  • Clean the floors with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner. The cloth should only be lightly damp - too much water can cause damage.
  • Dry mop the floor if you have a parquet floor.

Windows

  • Clean all sides of the windows when needed, including between the panes.
  • Clean all painted window parts, window frames and the window flashing on the outside.

Ceilings and walls

  • Use a dry duster or dusting brush on the ceiling. A damp cloth can leave the ceiling patchy.
  • Clean the vents regularly.
  • Clean the light fittings.
  • Wipe and clean behind the radiators. Clean the back by pulling a towel back and forth behind the radiator.

Other spaces

  • Sweep the balcony or patio clean.
  • Wipe algae off railings and floors with a wet cloth.
  • Sweep the garage clean.

Kitchen

Four cleaning tips for the kitchen:

  1. In the kitchen, grease-dissolving cleaners work best.
  2. For glass hobs there are special scrapers that make it easier to remove burnt-on dirt and soot.
  3. Grease marks on cupboard doors and other surfaces come off most easily with a ”magic sponge”.
  4. Clean baking trays and oven racks with oven cleaner. If you have a dishwasher, you can run the trays and racks in it after spraying them with oven cleaner.

Fridge

  • Clean the fridge at regular intervals. Use a damp cloth.
  • If there is water in the bottom of the fridge, the drain valve is blocked. As a tenant it is up to you to keep it clean. Watch the how-to video to see what to do.

Freezer

Defrost the freezer twice a year. Switch the freezer off and leave the door open. As the ice melts you can collect the water in a container so it does not end up on the floor. Never chip the ice away, as that can damage the freezer.

Oven

  • Clean the hotplates and hob with a grease-dissolving product and a soft sponge or cloth.
  • Open the oven door and take hold inside the oven if you want to pull the cooker out. Do not pull the handle.
  • Change the oven bulb by carefully unscrewing the glass and the bulb.
  • Clean the oven and the baking trays with a washing-up brush and washing-up liquid. Never use steel wool or tools. The trays can go in the dishwasher.

Drain in the kitchen sink

  • You must not touch the kitchen drain. Make a fault report through Mina sidor if you have problems with the drain in the kitchen.
  • Never pour oil or cooking fat down the drain, as it blocks the pipes. Let the fat cool, pour it into a container you can close and take it to a recycling centre.

Dishwasher

  • Clean the dishwasher with an empty programme when needed. Dishwasher cleaner from an ordinary supermarket works well.
  • Remember to take out and clean the filter.

Bathroom

Six cleaning tips for the bathroom and toilet

  1. Use a limescale-removing cleaner in the bathroom.
  2. Tile grout is easiest to clean with a brush.
  3. Let the limescale-removing cleaner work for about 10 minutes before you start wiping, and the job gets easier.
  4. Use window cleaner on glass walls.
  5. Citric acid removes discolouration in the toilet bowl. Pour it in and leave it to work overnight. More than one treatment may be needed.
  6. Avoid blocking the toilet. Flush only urine, faeces and toilet paper - nothing else.

Bathroom drain / floor drain

  • Clean out the washbasin drain regularly.
  • Clean out the floor drain regularly. Watch the how-to video to see how to clean your floor drain.

Tumble dryer & washing machine

  • After every use of the tumble dryer, clean the drum, empty the condensation container and clean the lint filter.
  • On the washing machine, clean the drum, the rubber seal and the door regularly.
  • When needed, take out the detergent drawer on the washing machine and clean it thoroughly.
  • When needed, clean the outside and the walls around it. Most machines can be pulled out so you can reach.

Tips for good indoor air

  • Open window vents are important for the best possible indoor environment. When they are open, all the air in your apartment is replaced every two hours. Closed vents give poor indoor air, the radiators struggle to heat up and mould can appear.
  • Make sure both the supply and extract vents are clean and free of dust.
  • Leave the bathroom door open after a bath or shower, and when you have done the washing or have clothes drying.
  • When you cook, open a window as far from the kitchen as possible - that gives better airflow.
  • In winter, air the apartment with a through draught for short periods. That works better than a window left slightly open for a long time.

Liability for damage and faults in the home

As a tenant you must follow the Swedish Tenancy Act* and look after your home and the shared spaces. If damage occurs through carelessness, you may be liable to pay compensation.
This applies for example to:

Abnormal wear - Damage that goes beyond normal use, such as deep scratches, stains or broken surfaces.

Incorrect use - Damage that occurs when the apartment's equipment is used in the wrong way.

Carelessness - For example lost keys that mean the lock has to be changed, or a blocked drain caused by things that do not belong there.

Vandalism - All kinds of deliberate damage in the apartment or the shared spaces.

Smoking indoors - Can lead to cleaning costs when you move out.

By looking after your home you help make the living environment safe and pleasant for everyone. Thank you for that.

*Tenants must follow the Swedish Tenancy Act, which is chapter 12 of the Land Code. Under section 24, the tenant has a duty to look after the home.
